The winning numbers in Friday night's drawing were 02-04-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball 23. Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, told us that the last time a ticket from the state gained a main national jackpot was 2008 when a ticket vended for $24 million.
"We're delighted," she said. "We're due and enthusiastic." The projected jackpot kicked the former $390 million record, which was divided in 2007 by two winners who subscribed tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.
Americans expended nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to smash the jackpot, which extends to a $462 million total and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot chances at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every permutation. Under that situation, the tactic would win $171 million fewer if your state also withholds taxes.
From state to state, people fall in line at trade stores Friday for one last gamble at striking it rich.
OPINION: This kind of gambling is just so sold out for human beings. We always love easy money by just buying a ticket we could be millionaires overnight. However, my concern is to those who really spend big in doing strategies to increase the probability of winning. I think they just broke the rule of gambling and put their financial state to danger.
